Oral health in pregnancy

Some women can get swollen and sore gums, which may bleed during pregnancy. Bleeding gums are caused by a build up of plaque on the teeth. Your dentist will be able to help with this, and during pregnancy you are entitled to free NHS dental treatment. This also continues for the first year after the birth of your baby.

To get free NHS dental treatment, you need to apply for a maternity exemption certificate (MatEx). Ask your doctor, nurse or midwife for from FW8. You must complete parts one and three of the form, and your doctor, midwife or nurse signs it to confirm that the information you’ve given is correct.
