Live Well Little Ones – looking after your child

Looking after your baby and keeping them safe and well doesn’t have to be complicated but you do need to plan for all eventualities.

  • Always have a plan for how your baby can sleep safely in a clear flat cot. Never sleep with your baby if you have been drinking or taking drugs and never sleep with your baby on a chair or sofa.
  • Keep your baby at a safe, even temperature
  • Keep button batteries out of reach and call 999 or go to A&E if you think your child may have swallowed one
  • If your baby is crying or you are very stressed it is okay to place them in a safe place, such as their cot, and walk away for a few minutes to calm down – never shake or smack your baby
  • Make sure you know what to do and who to talk to if your baby is poorly – the NHS 111 service is a good place to start.

We have produced a film to help you make the right choice when looking after your baby. This video has information about how to:

  • Safely put your baby to bed
  • Cope with a crying baby
  • How to keep your baby at the right temperature
  • How and where to get support when your baby is poorly

We have also produced this video in different languages (Polish, Gujarati, Somali and Urdu):
