How to stay alcohol free at celebrations without feeling awkward

Saying no to alcohol

Celebrations often come hand-in-hand with toasts and free flowing drinks, but choosing to stay alcohol free doesn’t mean you can’t have a great time. Whether it’s for your health, a personal preference or you simply don’t feel like drinking, staying sober at parties doesn’t have to be as awkward as it might first sound. Here’s some tips on how to own your sobriety with confidence and still have fun.

Have a go-to drink

Holding a drink in hand can help you feel more relaxed in social settings. Try a fun mocktail, flavoured sparkling water or a low-calorie soft drink. Many venues offer so many great non-alcoholic options.

Dealing with questions

When someone asks you why you’re not drinking, it can be difficult to know how to respond and can feel quite awkward. But it doesn’t have to be! We recommend keeping your answer short and upbeat. A simple “I’m good with this for now” or “I’m not drinking tonight”, usually does the trick. You’ll find that most people will respect your choice and move on.

Focus on the fun

Celebrations are about more than the alcohol – they’re about connecting with your friends and family, socialising, dancing and creating memories. Focus on those aspects and you won’t feel as though you’re missing out.

Bring your own

If you’re headed to someone’s house and you’re worried they won’t have any non-alcoholic choices in, why not take along your favourite alcohol-free drink?

Be confident

Remember, staying alcohol-free is a personal choice and there’s no need for you to apologise for it. If you’re comfortable with your decision, others will be too.
