How Step Right Out helps create smoke-free homes in Leicester

Smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable illness and early death. In Leicester, around 56,000 people smoke and many others are exposed to second-hand smoke in their homes and cars. Second-hand smoke is the smoke you breathe in when someone else is smoking nearby, and it can be harmful even if you don’t smoke yourself.

What is Step Right Out?

Our vision is to make Leicester a smoke-free city by 2030 and protect residents from the dangers of tobacco. That’s why we launched Step Right Out, a community project to help create more smoke-free homes and protect people from second-hand smoke.

When you join Step Right Out, you pledge to keep your home and car smoke-free. This simple step protects your family, friends, and visitors from the harmful chemicals in second-hand smoke and encourages smokers to protect themselves by smoking outdoors.

What you get when you join Step Right Out

  • A free smoke-free kit delivered to your home or email.
  • Resources and tips to keep smoke out of your home for good.
  • A monthly e-newsletter with the latest information on being smoke-free.
  • Updates on how your pledge is helping Leicester become smoke-free.
  • Membership in a growing network of smoke-free homes across the city.

Why second-hand smoke is dangerous

Second-hand smoke contains hundreds of harmful chemicals. Breathing it in can increase the risk of lung problems, heart disease, and cancer. It is especially dangerous for children, pregnant women, and people with existing health conditions. Even short exposure can cause harm, that’s why creating a smoke-free home is so important.

Do you need help to quit?

If you want to stop smoking altogether, our friendly stop smoking advisors can help. We offer one-to-one support, nicotine replacement therapies, and even e-cigarettes to suit your needs.
